No matter how hard I try, I just cannot seem to leave well enough alone! A few weeks ago, after finishing the Frauberger bookmark, I couldn't help but be displeased with it. The chains in the onion rings were a little too long and the bookmark itself had a tendency to curve. So, I tinkered with it here and there, and polished up the pattern to the point that it now works out straight (for me at least).
This time I used two colors (Lizbeth size 80 White and Wildflower Garden). I really like the way it turned out and plan on trying another two color version. Here it is next to the original, and you can see how the first version curves:
Last but not least, for those who would like to try with the new stitch counts, please see the diagram below.
I only changed one thing, decreasing the onion ring chains by 1
stitch on each side. However, if you pull your chains tightly you may want
to just stick with the original counts posted to my blog at the end of June. There is also a long connecting picot on the bookmark turns, which I briefly mentioned in a previous post. The extra note on the bottom left is for me, as I plan to try another version with the inner chains reduced to 9-9.
I like your version. It looks much tighter and neater. I also like the use of contrasting thread. It makes the pattern stand out more.
ReplyDeleteGood job!
I do like the colors of thread you use this time and isn't it funny how one stitch makes a difference I guess when you add it all up you can really see the difference, thank you for being the perfectionist you are hugs from Carollyn!
ReplyDeleteNice, Robin. Love the colours too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. Good to have, though my hankie border is growing nicely and isn't curving! : )
Glad to hear yours is working out! My chain tension tends to be on the looser side, so I couldn't quite get the first version to behave.
DeleteLove the white in your new bookmark -- it is quite mesmerizing, yet highlights your perfect tatting & all the rings along it's way :-)
ReplyDeleteMy working with your original diagram, did not curl or curve at all. In fact, I didn't even have to iron it before I took photos - it lay so flat. I had just put the WIP inside a thick book at night.
Thanks muskaan! Chains are so hard to predict. Some things work out great for one tatter but not so well for another due to differing chain tensions. You have the added benefit of design experience and ability to conform/make adjustments as necessary so that always helps!
DeleteYour new version looks beautiful! Besides the stunning contrast in the colours, I like the tighter onion rings. Another pattern I need to try... ;-)
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I haven't tried this out yet, I'm still working on my Jan Stawasz Masterpiece, but I am keeping track of your progress. I know this is something I will want to tat. I love your color choices!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful that is!!! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful and yes, it is straighter. Amazing what a tweak in the stitch count can do.
ReplyDeleteThis latest one is gorgeous! Love the contrast with white thread :). This bookmark is on my To tat list and I hope to get around to tatting it soon :).
ReplyDeleteDie Lesezeichen sind sehr schön!
ReplyDeleteI like your colour scheme, and yes it's straighter, This is a pattern I must try in the near future.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your diagram
Margaret
wow, nice and straight now, Great tatting. I do pull my chains tight although not as tight as some. Thanks again for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your pattern advice. I am going away for a few days and about to finish a handkerchief edging so I'm printing this out and taking it for my next thing. I really love bookmarks. Will keep you up to date on my success.....hopefully.....
ReplyDeleteGood luck! It is a labor intensive pattern, but is very pretty when finished. One of my favorites so far.
DeleteBeautiful. I like your new version better. Thanks for sharing your notes.
ReplyDeleteThe two colors look really good on this pattern.
