Bookmark variation

I had some spare black thread left on my shuttles, and decided to use it to tat a few small squares. As I was tatting, I started to wonder what it would look like if I joined the triangular ring clusters a little bit differently...staggered and in a straight line for a bookmark. So, after a bit of sketching and measuring, this is what I came up with (pictured alongside the little black squares I was tatting):

In the end, it's just a slight variation of an earlier bookmark I was working on, which has the ring clusters side by side. The new version is tatted in Lizbeth size 80 Easter Eggs. The earlier version is done in Lizbeth size 20, light pink (I can't remember the exact color name).

For the variation, I didn't get the picots on the central chains placed correctly, so it looks a little sloppy to me. I'm eliminating them and just leaving a clean center for the next one, but I think it might also look nice with criss cross picots. I don't know if I will actually get around to trying the criss cross picots though, as I always seem to be battling with finding enough time to put all of these ideas into use.

I'm currently working on writing patterns for these bookmarks and am aiming to have them ready in a couple of weeks. That's assuming I don't get distracted by anything else.

  1. Wow!!! Love the squares, the straight bookmark, and the variation ups and downs!!! :) I think the variation looks awesome with the picots and would look great without them as well as possibly with the crisscross!! :) Great ideas!!! :)
Just a thought, could you possibly have a few test tatters to tat the ideas for you and let you know their thoughts as well as show their work to you, or, could you just put the ideas in as suggestions?? :)

    1. Thanks Sue! Hmmm...interesting idea about the test tatters. I may have to think about that more. For the criss crossed picots, I think I'd need to try it out myself so that I would feel comfortable providing instructions. I've never actually made them successfully before, though I've only attempted them once when I was still a beginner tatter :)

Oh, and if you wanted to test or proofread this pattern just let me know and I can send you a copy when it's written up.

  2. Very pretty !!! The black one could have a satin ribbon strung through the empty spaces?

    1. Yes, that would be a nice addition for a bookmark :) Connected in a line, the little black squares also remind me of a choker or bracelet, if beads were added.

    1. Hah, I don't think I'd be able to keep up with a team, I'm a VERY slow designer! :)

You're certainly welcome to proofread or test tat this pattern if you'd like. I'll send you an email after it's been written up.

    2. I don't technically have a proofreading team, but have put out calls on my blog in the past for test tatters and proofreaders. You'd have to send me a message through the "Contact Form" on the right sidebar of my blog so I could get your email. Then, when I have something available to test, I would send you an email to see if you are still interested in testing/proofreading.

  4. I like both your bookmarks, I like the picots in the middle it breaks up the chains into small sections.

  5. Bookmarks! I LOVE Bookmarks! I've only tried twisted picots once, and they were horribly messy. I think I probably wasn't making them the correct length. It will be fun to see all of your bookmark variations together!

  6. Oh yes, I like the staggered arrangement.

  7. I'm slowly getting the pattern ready, and will put it in my Etsy shop when it's done. It's going to take a little longer than expected because I want to try out a version of the bookmark with criss crossed picots, to see if I like it.

  8. I kind of like the way it looks with the inside picots; half of them make a visual square but don't quite touch, and half of them touch to quarter the square. Lovely work.
