The onion ring magic square pattern is now available. You can access the file by clicking here, or by going to my free patterns page. I have test tatted and proofread this myself, but if you notice any mistakes please let me know!
To keep everything consistent, I ended up tatting these squares in white thread. However, I think this pattern would look more interesting in two colors.
I've made this pattern free as I really want to share the idea of designing magic squares. I love that these patterns can be made all in one round and would be very pleased if more designs cropped up in the future.
I still need to write a few posts to show the design process. If all goes well, I should have a post about deconstructing the magic square next week, and a post about how I designed the square a week after that.
It's going to be interesting seeing this in two colours. Lovely pattern.

Hi Robin, from Brisbane. Australia. Have been a fan of yours for ages, but only began tatting a year ago. Your designs inspire me and am now branching out into something other than bookmarks. When you say two colours would look good, do you mean doing the chains and rings in different colourse, or each magic square in a different colour? Thanks heaps - and especially for sharing your creativity - hugely appreciated!
ReplyDeleteHi Avie, more in the rings and chains sense, where you load shuttle 1 with your first color and shuttle 2 with a second color. The red and blue in my diagrams shows how the colors would be placed. Everything in red represents thread coming from shuttle 1 and everything in blue is thread coming from shuttle 2. From this, you can get a basic idea of the color layout (but try imagining it in colors other than red and blue). Hope this helps!
DeleteLovely pattern :) Thank you so much for sharing :)

ReplyDeleteThis is really stunning, thank you for sharing! I love how you show the choice A vs choice B to build smaller squares or larger triangles - it really makes sense when depicted that way.
