I had the idea to make tatting patterns that mimicked stained glass, and drew up several designs. Turns out, that's a lot harder to do than I thought. So, I've scrapped that idea and am instead using traditional two color tatting.
Here's one of the designs, which still needs a few more motifs and a border:
Not sure how much I like this, but since it works I'd like to see it through to the end. The colors look blue and white but are actually a dark blue (Lizbeth Ocean Turquoise Dk) and a light blue (Lizbeth Bright Blue Lt).
OH, I LOOOOOVE IT!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks totally awesome!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteFunny, I was thinking it would be cool to do something like stained glass, but not sure how. Yarnplayer's stained glass window tatting is as close as I have seen anywhere. Link here: https://yarnplayertats.blogspot.com/2009/05/stained-glass-pendants.html
It looks very nice! I think it would look more like stained glass if you used black as a motif border colour and a multi-coloured variegated for the rest of the elements.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marie, Sue, and Lavinia! Sue, yes I've seen those before and was partly inspired by them. There are also some other tatters who made stained glass looking crosses from Mary Konior's Black Magic pattern. Here's one link:

Lavinia, I should have clarified that I tried a sample in black and a variegated blue thread, but didn't like it. Maybe the variegated blue was too dark because some parts of it blended together with the black. Perhaps this pattern would look okay with black and a lighter variegated thread, or black and a light solid color.
Absolutely gorgeous (again!)
ReplyDeleteYes, I think there would have to be strong contrast between black and the other colour or colours to get a stained glass effect. I like your mat, blues just right for a snowfall mat.
ReplyDeleteI love the look of it. Absolutely beautiful I want to try this pattern. I not sure about what you were going for but post a picture of the stain glass beside it that you are trying to imulate. Love this, your work is always supurb 🌹❤🌹
ReplyDeleteCarollyn, I didn’t have any specific piece of stained glass in mind for this pattern, just the idea of stained glass in general. On a different design I drew up something similar to a Rose Window, but it will be a while before I try and tackle that. Still not sure what to do about the colors for the Rose Window though.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful! I wonder if you used black as the outline color and a bright variegated (something like Lizbeth "Rainbow Splash" or something even brighter) if it would look more like stained glass. Whatever colors you use, this is still a beautiful motif and a beautiful mat.

Gorgeous! That's something I would love to make, and I would keep it for myself!
